Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona, Champions League: Final Score 3-1 (3-5 agg), Barça advance to semi-finals despite defeat on the road - Barca Blaugranes
My takes on every player: Szczesny: Couple of descent saves and an incredible double save. But for God's sake, he cannot be giving away penalties like this. How many has it been ? He is very very lucky that none of them have led to a loss, till today. Martin: Let's get one thing straight. He is not Balde. Today's match highlighted just how reliant Barca are on Balde. The left wing is completely dead without him. As for Martin, he was shaky. Should have done better for both Dortmund's 2nd and 3rd goals. Cubarsi: Solid throughout. At times felt like he had to do a better job of clearing the ball, some poor clearances. I think that he could have done better for the 2nd goal, memory's a bit foggy, so need to rewatch it. Araujo: What a lousy mistake that was for the 3rd goal ! That was a tragedy. A really good chance to stake his claim for the starting CB pair to Pau, but he hasn't made the most of it. What is more worrying is that there seems to be a pattern of him making mistakes in important games and Barca ultimately suffering from it (remember PSG, Juve at home). A far cry from the beast he was during his full debut season. Kounde: Delivered the brilliant through ball which eventually led to the OG. Sloppy with stepping up, leading to Dortmund breaking the Offside Trap (The pen as well as some other chances). Did a fairly good job in defense otherwise. Should have done a better job with the chance in the first half. FDJ: Poor in the first half, gave the ball away a couple of times and got booked. Was tasked with providing control in the midfield but failed to do so. Improved significantly in the second half, and did his job well thereafter, especially after the introduction of Pedri. Also did well playing till the end with the YC. Gavi: A lot of energy as always, but not much to show for it. Offered no control in midfield, and wasn't involved in many attacks either. I guess not getting booked for once is a positive. Also did chip in defensively. Still a far cry from who he once was. Fermin: On and off all through out. Got in good positions to score but he really, and I mean really needs to work on his finishing. 2 CL nights in a row that he has been massively underwhelming in this department. Did not offer much defensively. Olmo is easily the better choice for the AM role as things stand. Raphinha: Poor on the night. A lot more would be expected of a BdoR contender, but nothing came off for him tonight. Raphinha before the IB would have surely buried that chance in the 2nd half. His drop in form is clearly cause for concern as we reach the pivotal stage of the season. Also looked dead at the final whistle. Lewandowski: Easily the best player out of the front 3 tonight, and maybe the entire starting 11. Good linkup play, good touches on the ball. Had a really good call for penalty that should have atleast been checked by VAR. Did not have a single shot on the night, since the service was non-existant. Yamal: Absolutely horrible in the first half. Improved a lot in the second, but overall a poor performance tonight. Can have no complaints for being hooked early by Flick. In all honesty, the poor boy needs rest. He is just 17. Subs: Pedri: Came on and instantly brought control and calmness to the game, putting Barca back into their usual rhythm in terms of ball possession and forward movement. Just goes to show just how important he is to this team. Eric: Some poor giveaways, should have done better to stop Duranville's cross. Ferran: Brought energy, but should also bring with it a good first touch. Olmo: Nice nutmeg, helped waste time, not enough time to do anything else.
