Mets Morning News: Some clubhouse drama to relieve your offseason boredom
The .500 OBP is an interesting if lofty idea and it sent me down the rabbit hole of seeing who's been reasonably close (other than Barry Steroid). Bonds, to his credit, was likely a HOF player even before his hat size started to grow, and his last year in Pittsburgh he led the league in walks and had a .456 OBP. John Olerud, one of my all time favorite mets, had a .447 one year for the Mets, which didn't lead the league. McGuire had a .470 that year in addition to 70 homers. And the big O had a .473 OBP his best season with the Jays. (can I call him the big O?) Wade Boggs did a hair better with .475. He certainly should have won an MVP. He lead the league in WAR 3 straight seasons, but that was before they knew what WAR was, so he was overlooked.Soto's magical .490 deserves an asterisk because it was the shortened 2020 season. (If Judge had played a shortened season last year, he'd have flirted with .490 as well, which is where he was a lot of the time during the first 66 games. Soto did have a .465 in 2021.The highest full season number in the modern era (other than Bonds) was Frank Thomas' very impressive .487 in 1994. There were others of honorable mention. Baseball Reference makes searches like this fairly easy and you can re-order it by year as well as by best.https://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/onbase_perc_season.shtml.500 is way up there. Maybe somebody does it, but it's almost out of reach.
