Maresca laments Chelsea’s wavering confidence, negative fan pressure - We Ain't Got No History
I think he may as well have tendered his resignation in front of the media with the comment. Coming out and blaming the fans for poor performances has the same effect. Can see this now getting especially toxic at the Bridge. Of course Maresca's comment achieves the exact opposite of trying to get the fans on board, and he does it shift blame from himself. Remarkably poor judgment on his part and cowardly attempt to save face. The fans give you what you deserve, and collapsing inside 20 minutes to Ipswich at home without Delap and Huthinson will go down as one of the worst things many at the ground will have seen at the Bridge. So many struggling financially right now, and to keep paying for incredibly expensive tickets only to see that kind of performance from players who either don't care or have no business being at a club like Chelsea. Genuinely astounded at how bone-headed Maresca was in making this comment, not least in destroying his own career at the club. What a distinct lack of class that now runs through the club: we've treated our own Cobham graduates with contempt, fired long-serving staff, raised ticket prices, made watching games less accessible, our owners are quite literally re-selling tickets that add massive premiums, and now we produce dire performances like that and blame the fans. We don't deserve this mess, but the owners and the leadership sure as hell do.
Chelsea 1-2 (4-2 agg.) Legia Warsaw, UEFA Conference League: Post-match reaction, ratings - We Ain't Got No History
I didn’t bother watching the game — it was obvious it would be dreadful, and that’s exactly what it turned out to be. What’s more damning are Maresca’s post-match comments. His takeaway was that the team avoided injuries, as if that justifies anything. It’s a weak, complacent excuse that reflects a manager with no ambition and no grasp of what Chelsea should expect/demand. How does he plan to rebuild trust with the fanbase when he delivers performances of that level and then tries to spin them as acceptable on the basis of avoiding injuries? Fans are paying inflated ticket prices, travelling during a cost of living crisis, and enduring a brand of football that is both ineffective and joyless. And after a defeat to the fifth-best team in the Polish league, Maresca’s message is that things are fine because no one picked up a knock? It’s so insulting. This isn’t just about one result — it’s about a broader attitude that lacks accountability, urgency, or any sense of standards that runs through the heart of the club. Maresca is not only failing to improve the team, he’s actively destroying what little connection remains between the club and its supporters. With each passing week that his P45 isn't issued, the disconnect between the club and the supporters deepens. At this point, he’s not just the worst manager we’ve had in recent memory — he’s the most detestable. It's not even close.
