Mets Morning News: Tobias Myers impresses, Brett Baty adjusts to first base
I know there’s consternation about Baty’s and Polanco’s abilities to play a competent 1BBut a couple of things with this:1. Pete was statistically the worst defensive 1B in baseball among everyday 1B last season - Michael Toglia was technically 2x as bad but in only ~700 innings, so doesn’t really count as an everyday 1B 2. Baty is an average to slightly above 3B and 2B with considerably more sprint speed (range) and a much better arm than Alonso. The same is true of Polanco’s sprint speed and arm, but his range was below average - granted, mostly relative to ML 2B rather than 1B, so you’d expect some positive transference of range moving down the defensive spectrum for both players Obviously, the offensive loss at the position will need to be made up, and it should via the upgrades they’ve made at 3B and DH, but it’s not as if they’re going from Matt Olson’s or Christian Walker’s defense at 1B
