The question is why do they feel a need to live a certain lifestyles they’re not making enough to live? Well the biggest issue is their ages and background. They are young and are mostly from working class and even poorer backgrounds.And 95% of professional athletes careers or 4 years long or less. They earn their money before they have even developed impulse control and most don't have people to give them proper advice concerning their finances. They're no different than any other people in their age bracket. Very few people before their 30yo understand, or even care, about managing their finances. And with the amount of money they make they attract all manner of people that are looking to take advantage of them, and sadly many times it's their own family.
